Heat Treatment Beyond Tradition: Novel Applications Explored

Book Abstract

Heat treang (or heat treatment) is a group of industrial, thermal and metalworking processes used to alter the physical, and somemes chemical, properes of a material. The most common applicaon is metallurgical. Heat treatments are also used in the manufacture of many other materials, such as glass. Heat treatment involves the use of heang or chilling, normally to extreme temperatures, to achieve the desired result such as hardening or soening of a material. Heat treatment techniques include annealing, case hardening, precipitaon strengthening, tempering, carburizing, normalizing and quenching. Although the term heat treatment applies only to processes where the heang and cooling are done for the specific purpose of altering properes intenonally, heang and cooling oen occur incidentally during other manufacturing processes such as hot forming or welding. This book offers a broad review of recent global developments in an applicaon of thermos and thermochemical processing to modify the micro structure and properes of wide range of engineering materials. Although there is no formal paron of the book, chapters represent different applicaon areas of heat treatment. The book is a mixture of convenonal and novel applicaons, exploring a variety of processes employing heang, quenching and thermal diffusion, makes the book very useful for a broad audience of scienst and engineers from academia and industry.
